About 10 SMART Volunteers responded to both Hurricane Gustav and Ike with the International
Fund for Animal Welfare and American Humane Association Disaster Teams. Volunteers
participated in rescuing and caring for the animals.
Since Hurricane Katrina, pet owners around the country are encouraged to take their pets with
them. Rescue workers who participated in post-Katrina rescue efforts described the response
to Gustav and Ike to be much better. Most animals were evacuated with their owners.

Emanuel Maciel, a SMART member, helped during Hurricane Ike by responding with the

Here are two members story of their time in Texas:
SMART members Sue Webb, Linda MacCoy and Scott Facey responded to Hurricane Ike on
September 15th. They started their trip by arriving to a powerless hotel in Houston Texas and
met up with IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). Under the leadership of Deb
Gleason (Canada's responder for IFAW), they were sent on to Orange City, Texas to assist the
Animal Control Officer, Theresa, in cleaning out and reopening the local shelter. The shelter
had taken on 4 feet of water and Theresa had to swim to the puppies already in the shelter.
She had no casualties at the shelter, but one dog was found on the grounds. After a day and
1/2 of cleaning, the shelter was up and running. The team was then able to bring in animals
from the streets of Orange City. Flooding was the primary cause of damage to the area.
